The history of the Comite River Diversion Canal is as tangled as the river itself.
Congress approved the 12-mile canal in 1992 to channel 20,000 cubic feet of water per second to the Mississippi River, lowering flood stages along the Comite and Amite rivers in East Baton Rouge, Ascension and Livingston parishes.
